Hotel Sofia
This is a cool old hotel building from the Pickwick days of western America, newly done up with comfy beds in affordable rooms right on Broadway downtown with a mellow hangout downstairs in Currant, with excellent food, absinthe and atmosphere.
Here’s what the Yelpers say:
The hotel itself has recently been renovated, but has retained the great history of the building. For some tidbit facts about the hotel and neighborhood, check out the light covers in every hallway–pictures and trivia about what San Diego used to be like. The rooms themselves are gorgeous (please see pictures), beautiful dark wood furniture, Balinese style sinks, flat screen tv’s in every room, great views of downtown San Diego, and perfect location to walk around the gaslamp district.
I typically judge a hotel based mainly on two things: the comfy-ness of the bed, and their bath products. Sleeping in the Sofia Hotel bed made me seriously wonder if I could ever go back to my own lumpy bed: it was the perfect mix of soft and firm with just the right amount of pillows. Their bath products had a curious unique characteristic that I hadn’t seen before–all of the bottlenecks were extra wide. What an ingenius idea, no longer will hotel guests smack the lotion bottle against their palm in frustration trying to retrieve the remaining third of the bottle. No longer will hotel guests have to chase the poor housekeepers down the hall, begging for more shampoo/conditioner/lotion. At the Sofia, no bath product shall go to waste. Call me a cheap date, but I LOVED this!
