Renting a house or apartment in San Diego can be a little tricky if you don't know what to expect. Some neighborhoods are convenient for walking and public transportation, some aren't. Some places by the beach are happy to rent short term, some aren't. Some places will take advantage of J1 students who don't know the score, some won't.
The first place to look when you get here is The Irish Outreach Center. As a not-for-profit organization, the Center accumulates listings for Irish friendly rentals and referrals for Irish friendly agents and hooks you up for free! Even better, Bernadette is an advocate for you if you get into a spot with a landlord, have an emergency, or face the kind of discrimination that is actually still illegal in America.
The Irish Outreach Center is absolutely your first stop!
If you can't find help at the Center or can't make use of their unfortunately limited resources in a timely fashion, JohnnyCab is here to help, too. We've been driving you around for a few summers now, and hearing your stories first hand. We know several of the places that have worked out well for J1 Irish students in the past (and some that didn't!).
Right now we're working on getting to know the people so we can streamline the whole process for you. We'd like to create a networking service for future J1ers where we problem solve your credit checks, match up good roommates, handle your unintentional repairs, and get your security deposit back when its time to go home.
(If you don't know what any of that means, you definitely should read our "5 Secrets to Endless Summer" report, sign-up below. Its free, and you'll learn some stuff that could save you major headaches and wasted cash.)
For the moment, if the Irish Outreach Center can't help you, we suggest you call our friend Steve Kroesing at Southland Mortgage & Property Management: 619. 381. 6344. A long time friend of JohnnyCab, Steve has 21 years in San Diego real estate and knows a lot of helpful people in town. (Full disclosure: he's Irish, too.)
Also, to give you an immediate idea of what's out there and what prices for apartments, flats, and rental houses are really like in San Diego, we're publishing a feed from Craig's List on the right, click through any of the links to find out more about the listing and one of San Diego's most valuable free resources for J1 Students.
